Can he hold onto the job if and when Davis makes a big push?Īfter a few weeks of training camp, Davis hasn’t really shown he’s a true safety. That’s why the DT is getting an extended run in the rotation with the starters. Spence clearly has Belichick’s attention. Training camp’s really a lot about consistency and being able to sustain it for all of us. “I think he fits into our defensive system here,” Belichick said this week. In 2021, Christian Barmore and Akeem Spence are playing really good football, likely pushing Davis off the roster. Or else he’s probably getting cut.ĭavis was a really strong performer in 2020, but he suffered from concussion issues and couldn’t stay on the field. Sherman is going to have to play well - and fast. But the Patriots have a lot of versatile offensive linemen. Sherman, a 2021 sixth-round pick, is spending some time at guard and tackle at training camp, which will give him a better shot at making the team. In the meantime, Hoyer needs to state his case for sticking around, even after Stidham returns. Stidham is on the PUP list and might start the season there. But if Jarrett Stidham is healthy, he is probably the choice over Hoyer. After a very quiet rookie year, Asiasi has work to do to prove he should be TE3 behind Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry.īecause the Patriots know firsthand how quickly COVID-19 can knock out a starting quarterback, they will carry three players at the position. However, Asiasi didn’t have a great spring and has spent training camp on COVID-19/reserve after being a breakthrough case, getting the virus while vaccinated. He’s also a former third-round pick, so the Patriots probably want to keep him around. The good news is that Asiasi’s top competition is Matt LaCosse, a player who has never really impressed at any NFL stop, including in New England.Īsiasi, by virtue of a lack of depth, should make this team. If Asiasi had more competition, I’d be worried for him. The rest of the running back room has its niche, including rookie Rhamondre Stevenson, who Taylor would probably have to supplant to make the roster. He isn’t a pure pass-catcher, nor does he really thrive either as a home-run hitter or a between-the-tackles grinder. Taylor is a gifted running back, even if he doesn’t have one trait that’s remarkable. So while Harry is probably the better player, there’s a chance Wilkerson gets an extended chance to prove himself in training camp. He’s also a willing and capable special teams player. Wilkerson isn’t the biggest guy, but he’s a speedster. Wilkerson is a natural backup for Nelson Agholor, as we’ve seen with Agholor limited for the last few sessions of training camp. Here’s a player that Harry should worry about.

That would make the team’s decision easier. The receiver has had a strong training camp, and could potentially push himself into WR3. Harry does some work on kickoff but isn’t a clear contributor there. The issue with rostering Harry is that he’s likely the WR4, a position that typically requires the player to contribute on special teams. They were trying until he made his trade request, which probably backfired and made a move more complicated. They would certainly consider trading him. Harry is a unique case as a “bubble” player. As we dive into the preseason, here are 13 players who need to play well in order to make the team. That’s why there’s a hefty group of players who can make the roster, but are not locks to do so. With New England retaining a large percentage of its talent from last season and getting COVID-19 opt-outs like Dont’a Hightower back, this 2021 roster is much deeper - and likely much more talented - than the 2020 squad.

And then there was the draft, where the Patriots picked two players (QB Mac Jones, DT Christian Barmore) in the first 38 picks.

“The New England Patriots stocked their roster aggressively this offseason, particularly in free agency, with Bill Belichick guaranteeing roughly $175 million in the first two days.
